PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a simplified apparatus for producing high-quality thermomechanical pulp at a low energy consumption. SOLUTION: The apparatus for the thermomechanical refining of wood chips contains a step to soften the wood chips by exposing the chips to steam atmosphere, press the softened chips to effect the disintegration, dehydration and softening to a solid consistency of ≥55% or thereabout, and dilute the disintegrated and dehydrated chips to a solid consistency of about 30-55% to prepare the chips for refining. The disintegration process partially defibrates the wood chip. Both of the defibration and fibrillation are achieved between a pair of rotary disks placed opposite to each other.
