PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recording and reproducing device recording many latest broadcasts at a time by automatically compressing and deleting unnecessary data. SOLUTION: A hard disk recorder 3 receives and records a plurality of broadcasts. A user sets a keyword for storage and a keyword for erasure at an arbitrary point of time. A compression time limit and a storage time limit are set for each program and the hard disk recorder 3 scans recorded programs at predetermined time to perform compression and erasure. A center server 2, on the other hand, totals and analyzes reproduction viewing information received from respective hard disk recorders 3 to generate reproduction rate information. The reproduction rate information is distributed to the respective hard disk recorders 3, which each automatically select programs to be stored and programs to be compressed and erased based upon the information.
