<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus which can achieve power saving as a whole by suppressing waste of electric power during the physical format processing or data clearing processing of a hard disc drive (HDD), and to provide a control method therefor. <P>SOLUTION: When detecting the HDD which is not physically formatted, the image forming apparatus displays an alarm message on an operation screen (S1). Subsequently, a physical format operation is started by selecting a physical format (S3). After the start of the physical format operation, an operation mode is automatically shifted to a power-saving mode (S4). In the power-saving mode, the supply of the electric power to a fixing device etc. is blocked. After a shift to the power-saving mode, the image forming apparatus is kept in a standby state while maintaining the power-saving mode until the completion of the physical format operation (S5).
