The electrostatic precipitator is characterized in that the interval between adjacent protrusions (10) at the forward end is set such that ozone generation becomes lower, under the same voltage, when power is supplied from a high voltage power supply (51B) such that a discharge electrode plate (52A) has a potential higher than that of a ground electrode plate (52B) than when power is supplied from the high voltage power supply (51B) such that the discharge electrode plate (52A) has a potential lower than that of the ground electrode plate (52B).
