The method involves declaring an inner generic address in a contact address list, and transmitting a request to the address by an external client, by an address translating server. The request is sent to inner addresses over an enterprise network. A response notification is sent to other inner addresses based on response to the request by one of the inner addresses to freely maintain the other addresses for new address request. Independent claims are also included for the following: (A) a system for changing an identity and private/public availability of an instant messaging address of an enterprise network (B) a computer program product including instructions of program code for implementing steps of a method for changing an identity and private/public availability of an instant messaging address of an enterprise network.
