A core rod is inserted in a clad pipe, and the moisture in a clearance between the core rod and the clad pipe is removed. The clearance is connected to a drying gas atmosphere and/or evacuated so as to heat and integrate them, during which time an optical fiber is drawn. Alternatively, the core rod is inserted in the clad pipe and the moisture on the core rod surface and on the inner surface of the clad pipe is removed, during which time an optical fiber is drawn from one end. Thereby, an optical fiber of high quality is efficiently produced.
