An organic electroluminescence element having a positive electrode and a negative electrode and, provided between them, an organic emitting layer, wherein the organic emitting layer comprises a 1, 3, 6, 8-tetra- substituted pyrene compound of a specific structure as a material for forming the organic emitting layer. The material for forming an organic emitting layer exhibits a blue emission of high color purity, when used alone or as a guest, and high emission efficiency, and is stable in a long time operation, and the organic EL element exhibits high emission efficiency and a long operation life and is capable of providing an organic EL display which exhibits high emission efficiency, a long operation life and high performance capabilities.
