PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a shield machine capable of easily preventing a collapse of ground on both the sides of a section of an approach to a tunnel. SOLUTION: This shield machine 1 for use in the construction of the tunnel passing underneath a road etc. is equipped with a plurality of main rectangular shields 6 which are vertically and horizontally combined together in a predetermined arrangement and which can be each independently driven, and a plurality of side rectangular shields 15 which are each provided outside the main shields 6 on both the sides in an independently drivable manner and which have a smaller width than the main shield 6. In the excavation of the section of the approach to the tunnel, the side shields 15 are driven in advance of the main shields 6, so that both the sides of the section of the approach can be excavated by means of the side shields 15 and so that both the collapse of both the sides of the section of the approach can be prevented from being caused by that excavated section.
