The device has a soft start unit (14) arranged in parallel to a firing capacitor which is provided in a phase control unit having a Diac. The unit (14) has a capacitor circuit (38) operating with two different capacitances based on a resistance value of a tunable resistor. The circuit has two series connected capacitors (40, 42) that operate with smaller capacitances, where the capacitor (40) is connected in parallel to a resistor (44). The capacitor circuit (38) is so designed that the capacitance value of the circuit is small when the resistance value of the tunable resistor is small and capacitance value is large when the resistance value is large.
