<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for designing a discharge lamp having a minimum size, high light efficiency and a small heat load, to provide a lamp designed by such a method, and to provide a reflector suited for the lamp. <P>SOLUTION: The eccentricity e<SB>O</SB>of an ellipse is adapted for a condenser system according to the following equation (3); e<SB>O</SB>=e<SB>a</SB>(γ')-Δe(γ', E, g) (3). In the equation (3), e<SB>a</SB>is given from the relation of equation (1) andΔe is given from the relation of equation (2).
