PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a plasma display apparatus in which the damage to a drive circuit can be prevented, and to provide a driving method for the same. SOLUTION: The plasma display apparatus includes a pattern recognition section for recognizing the alternate patterns, in which cells of more than the prescribed number of N-th lines are turned on by a video signal inputted from the outside and cells of more than the prescribed number of (N+1)th lines are turned on, a subfield mapping section for mapping the video signal in a subfield unit, and a control section for controlling the subfields, in such a manner that the subfields of the prescribed number among the subfields of the entire part inside one frame are used, when the pattern recognition section recognizes the alternate patterns. The damage to the sustain-driving section and the scan-driving section are controlled, by reducing the generated peak current controlling the subfields in such a manner that the subfields of the prescribed number among the subfields of the entire part inside one frame are used at the recognizing of the alternate patterns.
