摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display device capable of being widely applied to a computer, a word processor, a monitor of an on-vehicle navigation device, a TV and the like and having high response speed, excellent display quality and low power consumption. SOLUTION: In the liquid crystal display device having a liquid crystal layer wherein a liquid crystal material having negative dielectric anisotropy is interposed between two substrates opposed to each other and the long axis direction of liquid crystal molecules which constitute the liquid crystal material is aligned in a direction nearly vertical to a principal surface of at least one substrate when voltage lower than a threshold voltage is applied and aligned in a direction nearly parallel thereto when voltage not lower than the threshold voltage is applied, when refractive index anisotropy of the liquid crystal material and thickness of the liquid crystal layer are defined asΔn and d (nm), respectively, retardationΔn×d satisfies formula (1): 240 nm<Δn×d<420 nm and at least one of a splay elastic constant K11 and a bend elastic constant K33 of the liquid crystal material satisfies formula (2); K11≤15 or K33≤15.
