PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a photonic crystal fiber that is capable of single-mode operation, even with a short wavelength and that is small in bend loss. SOLUTION: The clad 12 of the photonic crystal fiber 10 is formed with a first to fourth pore layers 15-18 in the fiber radial direction with the core 11 as the center. In this case, where d<SB>1</SB>is the diameter of pores 12a making up the first pore layer 15, at least one among the pores 12a constituting the second to the fourth pore layers 16-18 is formed with a diameter d<SB>2</SB>that is smaller than d<SB>1</SB>.
