PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a soot detector constituted so as to effectively utilize the phenomenon that dielectric breakdown is produced between both electrodes of a detection element in a region, where the discharge current in a discharge phenomenon is low, by the soot between both electrodes, to properly detect soot or its concentration regardless of the amount of the soot while minimizing the abrasion of both electrodes. SOLUTION: In a state that the detection element 100 is exposed to the exhaust gas of a diesel engine by both electrodes 121 and 132, high voltage is applied across both electrodes 121 and 132 at mutually different periods while controlling a booster circuit 240 by a microcomputer 210. The microcomputer 210 judges the presence of the soot between both electrodes 121 and 132 on the basis of the difference between respective voltages generated between both electrodes 121 and 132 by accompanying the application of high voltage at the mutually different periods and the soot between both electrodes 121 and 132 is detected by accompanying the judgment of the presence of the soot.
