[Also in Division G5] Apparatus for applying the method disclosed in Specification 959,976 for ciphering a signature or other graphic record comprises a transmitting screen 20, Figs. 2 and 3, having on its underface a pattern such as a series of spaced-apart bands of carbon ink or other impression copying material so that when, for example, a signature is inscribed upon its upper face a series of bits thereof is transferred to an encoding dummy 15, Fig. 1, having on its upper face a corresponding but reversed pattern in which clear spaces match the carbon ink portions of the screen and are separated by ciphering material, such as might be obtained from a medley of random signatures. Typically, the carbon ink bands on the screen may be 0À010 inch wide and be separated by spaces 0À030 inch wide. In use, the screen underface and the dummy upper face are placed in contact and exact registration is ensured by spaced aligning holes 29 and 28 in each which co-operate with pins 35 in lower leaf 31 of a collating frame 30, Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown). A bank passbook may be provided with an encoding dummy 15 incorporated inside its cover and a specimen signature may be obtained thereon by using a transmitting screen 20 comprising a standard signature form with the carbon ink pattern on its underface. After ciphering the signature, the encoding dummy may be protected by a covering of transparent plastics material. |
