Primary mercaptans are prepared by reacting terminal olefins with thiol-carboxylic acids (up to C7), followed by hydrolysis of the "antiMarkownikoff" ester product. An initiator such as azo-bisisobutyronitrile may be used for the addition reaction. Exemplified primary mercaptans prepared by hydrolysing the intermediate acetyl compounds (from the appropriate olefins and thiolacetic acid) are: n-dodecyl, 2-ethylhexyl, C11- 15 mixed alkyl, 2-phenylethyl, n-octyl, eicosyl, n-hexyl, cyclohexyl and C15- 20 mixed alkyl. |
