A liquid crystal display device comprising a first substrate (5) where reflective pixel electrodes (7) for reflecting light are formed; a second substrate (11) where a transparent electrode (9) opposed to the reflective pixel electrodes is formed, the second substrate (11) being parallel to the first substrate (5); a liquid crystal (8) sealed between the first substrate (5) and the second substrate (11); a backlight (2) for emitting illumination light from the backside of the first substrate (5); and a light-gathering plate (4) having a multiple of line prisms (LP) for gathering the illumination light from the backlight (2) onto the array of reflective pixel electrodes (7). There are formed, in each reflective pixel electrode (7), light and dark portions such that the reflectivity of each pixel continuously varies from a lowest value of inside to a highest value of outside. In this way, liquid crystal display devices can be obtained which exhibit an improved light utilization coefficient of the backlight and a raised illuminance of the screen and the manufacturing cost of which is lower.
