PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a gas barrier film which has high dimensional stability even to heat or the like during processing or using the film and excellent gas barrier properties to steam or oxygen, and can hardly give a rise to a change of properties due to chemicals, and a display substrate/a color filter/an organic EL element using this gas barrier film. SOLUTION: The gas barrier film is formed of a base material film 11 with not lower than 150°C load deflection temperature and at least a gas barrier layer 13/a smoothing layer 15 or a smoothing layer 15/a gas barrier layer 13 stacked in that order on the base material film 11. The base material film 11 is preferably formed of a polyethylenenaphthalate and the gas barrier layer 13 is formed of an inorganic oxide, an inorganic oxidized nitride, an inorganic oxidized carbide or an inorganic oxidized nitrified carbide. The smoothening layer 15 is a material containing a cardo-polymer, a solgel or an acrylic skeleton.
