<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently remove nitrate nitrogen contained in water at a low cost. <P>SOLUTION: In a water purification method, first of all, a water purification promoting material in which sulfur-oxidizing bacteria capable of oxidizing elemental sulfur (elemental sulfur-oxidizing bacteria) and having pH characteristics suitable for growing near neutral pH, and carriers of the elemental sulfur-oxidizing bacteria are mixed is produced (101). For its production, rock in which the elemental sulfur-oxidizing bacteria live or its ground product, specifically strongly acidic rock distributed in a volcanic region or its ground product, may be collected. At the same time, a water purification material obtained by solidifying the elemental sulfur with alkaline sludge, which is lime-based hydraulic material, is produced (102).
