PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an automatic adapting device capable of completing adaptation in a short time considering a case with an engine operating state in which adaptation is performed giving priority to the improvement of fuel consumption. SOLUTION: Adaptation target values are respectively determined to a plurality of engine output values, and parameters for engine operation control are searched using fuzzy inference so that these output values satisfy the adaptation target values. In this case, consequent part functions of the fuzzy inference are separately preset on the case of not giving top priority to fuel consumption and the case of giving top priority to fuel consumption, and the parameters are searched by selectively using the consequent part functions.
