PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To inexpensively provide a projection type image display device capable of preventing irregular color and the lowering of contrast by raising the degree of polarization. SOLUTION: The projection type image display device 10 is constituted of a light source part 11, a mirror 12, condensing lenses 13a and 13b, a polarizing beam splitter 15, a reflection type liquid crystal panel 16, a projection lens 17, supporting members 18a and 18b, a casing 21 and a base 22. Illuminating light radiated from the light source part 11 is reflected by the mirror 12 and made incident on the polarizing beam splitter 15. The polarizing beam splitter 15 is supported by the supporting members 18a and 18b from both side parts, and separates the illuminating light to S polarized light and P polarized light with the high degree of polarization. The S polarized light emitted from the polarizing beam splitter 15 is made image light composed of the S polarized light and the P polarized light and reflected by the reflection type liquid crystal panel 16, and only the P polarized light out of the image light made incident on the polarizing beam splitter 15 again is transmitted and made incident on the projection lens 17.
