PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus equipped with a fixing unit which can increase the reliability of even contactless type temperature detection and also can reduce the power consumption, and a control method for a heat generating source of the image forming apparatus. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus is equipped with a control part 81 which detects temperatures of a fixing belt and a pressure roller through temperature sensors 53 and 63 etc., and a temperature memory 83 which stores sequentially measured temperature detection data one from another, and the control part 81 acquires every prescribed number of successive temperature detection data from the temperature memory 83, averages every prescribed number of successive temperature detection data except temperature detection data of the highest temperature and lowest temperature, and controls actual temperatures of heat generating sources such as the fixing belt and pressure roller based on the sequentially averaged temperature detection data.
