The cooking device has a support for a cooking pot (15), a heating device for the cooking pot and a temperature detection device for the pot at a point on the outside of the pot. The temperature detection device has at least one quotient pyrometer (20a,20b) and a controller with a memory for processing the signal of the pyrometer to determine the temperature of the pot using data from the memory. An independent claim is also included for a method of detecting the temperature of a cooking pot.
