FIELD: metal working, namely processes for applying wear resistant coatings onto cutting tools. ^ SUBSTANCE: method is realized at plasma-vacuum deposition of multi-layer coating. Method comprises steps of depositing lower layer of titanium and aluminum-alloyed metal; intermediate layer of titanium nitride or carbonitride and metal; upper layer of intermediate layer material alloyed with aluminum; using silicon, iron chrome, molybdenum or zirconium as metal. Layers of coating are deposited by means of three built-up cathodes arranged horizontally in the same plane. Two cathodes are arranged mutually opposite and they are made of titanium and used metal. Third cathode is made of titanium and aluminum. ^ EFFECT: enhanced efficiency of cutting tool, improved adhesion and cohesion strength of layers and base material. ^ 1 tbl |
