PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polyvinyl alcohol having all of practically sufficient mechanical characteristics, water resistance and endurance and extremely useful for ropes, tents, civil engineering sheets and spun yarns and many applications including reinforcing materials for cement, rubbers and plastics and to provide a method for producing the polyvinyl alcohol-based fiber. SOLUTION: The polyvinyl alcohol-based fiber is composed of (A) a polyvinyl alcohol-based fiber having≥1,200 degree of polymerization and≥99 mol% degree of saponification and (B) a polyamide-based polymer obtained by polymerizing≥10C aliphatic or alicyclic dicarboxylic acid component with≥10C aliphatic or alicyclic diamine component and the ratio of the component B occupied in the fiber is 0.1-10 mass% and the component B is uniformly contained in the interior of the fiber.
