<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method that recognizes a handwritten mark by means of a pen comprising ultrasonic and infrared transmitters and a handwriting stroke input device for receiving ultrasonic waves and infrared rays to measure stroke position data, storing the pen-drawn stroke position data and sending the stored data to a personal computer. <P>SOLUTION: A stroke center position is computed and a mark shape is identified from pen state information specific to a handwriting operation.
