PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a display element and an optical device capable of maintaining good display performance for a long period. SOLUTION: The display element comprises an effective part 106 which is formed on the main surface 100A of a substrate and has a plurality of display elements for displaying a picture and a sealing body 300 which is arranged so as to cover at least the effective part 106 of the main surface 100A of the substrate. The sealing body 300 has a structure of the lamination of at least two layers of buffer layers 311 and 312 and barrier layers 320 which are larger in pattern than those of the buffer layers 311 and 312 and cover respective buffer layers 311 and 312, and the first buffer layer 311 has a different thickness from that of the second buffer layer 312.
