PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electron emission element having high electron emission efficiency and realizing good emission characteristic for a long time, and to provide an electron source and an image display device using it.

SOLUTION: In this electron emission element, an equipotential line of 0.5 Vf [V] is inclined to a first conductive film side rather than a second conductive film side in a cross-section passing a part emitting electrons of the first conductive film and a part of the second conductive film located in the shortest distance from the part emitting electrons of the first conductive film and near the part emitting electrons of the first conductive film when electrons are emitted from the first conductive film by applying the drive voltage Vf [V] between the first conductive film and the second conductivity film so that the potential of the second conductive film is higher than that of the first conductive film.
