PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image display apparatus that can display an image without affecting its colors even if the range of light quantity made incident to a light valve is varied. SOLUTION: Projection gradation information is formed in which each gradation value indicating the brightness of an image in an input image signal is converted to a value in the range of 0 to 1, wherein 0 is the value when the projection luminous flux quantity is 0 while 1 is the value when the same quantity that can be outputted by the present apparatus is maximized. Then, on the basis of the designated range of lighting intensity and the display characteristic of the present apparatus, the output range is determined in the range of 0 to 1 of the projection gradation information and divided by the number of gradations indicating the brightness of the image. Thus, the display gradation is decided corresponding to each gradation showing the brightness of the image. Thereafter, in the input image signal, the gradation indicating the brightness of the image is converted to the display gradation and outputted to a means for controlling the light valve.
