A method for predicting a future event in a parameter X monitored by a sensor comprises; sampling the output x of the sensor at regular time intervals t, performing a mathematical function y = f(x,t), where the rate of change of y with respect to t is greater than the rate of change of x with respect to t, if y falls outside a defined range bounded by a predetermined value Yalarm, incrementing an event counter, and d. when the event counter reaches a predefined warning limit, setting a warning condition warning of the future event. The method is conveniently embodied in a computer algorithm used to operate a warning alarm system providing advance warning of the predicted future event. The algorithm rapidly extracts response data whilst using sensors with relatively slow response and where detection limits are close to the sensitivity, noise or drift of the sensor.
|
