A mortise lockset apparatus (10) for a door mounted in a door frame, the apparatus including a case (12) to fit in a cavity within the door, a retractable bolt within the case and moveable into a recess formed in the door frame when the door is closed, and a handle (18) operably connected to the retractable bolt (14) for opening the door. A lockout mechanism (22) is enclosed within the apparatus to prevent the handle from being turned in order to lock the door. A key reader (26) is provided to disengage the lockout mechanism (22) when properly configured keys are operated to release the lock. The lockout mechanism (22) includes a motor driven cam (29) with a sliding stop (34) engageable with the handle, and a slip clutch allows the motor to continue running after the sliding stop (34) has reached the full extent of its travel.
