REFRACTORY SLAB JOINING SYSTEM

A refractory slab (2) for use in an electrolytic cell has a top surface, a b ottom surface and at least one engagement surface (2D) f or engagement with a corresponding surface (ID) of an adjacent slab (1). The en gagement surface (2D) has a top region and a bottom regi on that extends perpendicularly from respective top and bottom surfaces. The to p and bottom regions are connected by a sloping region s uch that the angle between the sloping region and the top and bottom regions is greater than 90.degree.. The slabs eliminate straight li nes at joints along which bath from the electrolytic cell may infiltrate during use. The e ngaging surfaces may also be arranged such that the slab s can be placed into position when forming a refractory lining by vertical movement a lone, which can lead to shorter times for relining of th e cell.
