A device for controlling an internal combustion engine in which a catalyst is provided in an exhaust system. The device has fuel cut execution means for performing fuel cut when a vehicle mounted with the internal combustion engine is in a deceleration state. In the execution of the fuel cut, when the speed (SPD) of the vehicle is more than a predetermined first speed (Sh), the amount (Ga) of suction air of the internal combustion engine is set less than the amount (Gai) of suction air when the engine is in an idle state (step 120). On the other hand, when the speed (SPD) of the vehicle is equal to or less than the first speed (Sh), the amount (Ga) of suction air is set greater than the amount (Gai) of suction air when the engine is in an idle state (step 130). |
