The instrument has a profile carrier (11) e.g. Aluminium extruded section, with a guide area and a monitoring car (14). A scannable measuring ruler is arranged on the carrier and a sensor (26) is provided for the evaluation of the actual position. At least two guiding rollers (17,27) are arranged parallel to each other which have tread profile such that their movement is free from backlash.
