Self-supporting construction comprises kit elements consisting of a new riser, new step (15) and new front element (14) and having a sub-structure made from laminated wood which is joined to visible surfaces by hot pressing with a flexible decorative wear layer (18) using a soft adhesive (20). The decorative layer is arranged on the step and front element. An independent claim is also included for a process for the production of kit elements for the above self-supporting construction. Preferred Features: The edge between the step and the front element is rounded. A profiled supporting strip (7) is arranged on the old step (2) and old riser (3) using flange fixing elements.
