Fungus mucor hiemalis kingdom EH8 (I) (DSM 16290) or its components, are new. Independent claims are also included for: (1) a method for the removal of heavy metals from aqueous media comprising contacting (I) with heavy metal containing fluid medium for a time interval, that sufficiently removes at least a part of the heavy metals from the fluid medium by addition of (I), and separating (I) and the fluid medium from one another; and (2) a filter device for the finding/removing of heavy metals in a liquid medium comprising: (i) an inlet for liquid medium contaminated with heavy metals; (ii) an outlet for cleaned liquid medium; and (iii) one or more filter layers with through coated carrier materials, which are arranged between the inlet and outlet successively.
