Production of 3-alkoxypropanols comprises: (a) alkoxylating acrolein or an acrolein precursor with an alcohol in the presence of an acidic ion exchanger as catalyst; (b) separating the reaction mixture from the catalyst and optionally removing starting materials; and (c) catalytically hydrogenating the product.
