<p>The present invention provides a method and system for in-RIP processing and printing of variable documents. The method of the invention comprises generating a page description language (PDL) file defining said fixed and variable elements and a data file defining instances of said variable elements, and processing the PDL file in conjunction with the data file in a raster image processor (RIP), to render the variable document into the image memory of a digital output device. The invention further comprises subjecting the variable elements to transformation according to algorithms comprised in the PDL file. In a further aspect, the method comprises in-RIP imposition of multiple instances of the variable document. In this aspect, the PDL file comprises a loop, or a series of nested loops processed to render one or more instances of the variable document. The system of the invention comprises a software application capable of generating the PDL files and the data files according to the present invention, a RIP capable of processing said PDL files in conjunction with said data files; and a digital output device connected to said RIP and capable of printing documents according to the invention.</p> |
