A guide wire having a distal end and a proximal end and having a core wire and a coil section that is installed on the distal end side. The pitch p of the coil is 1.1 to 3 times the diameter d of a coil material, the gap between the core wire and the coil material and the gap between the windings of the coil material are filled with elastomer, and the surface of the coil section forms a smooth flat surface. The guide wire has excellent insertion ability and torque transmission ability, is less likely to have permanent deformation, and is less likely to be trapped.
