PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a paper feeder capable of effectively preventing double-feeding. SOLUTION: A number-of-sheet sensor 14 detects the number of sheets in a nip part between a carrying roller 2 and a separating roller 3 or downstream thereof, and a sheet position sensor 12 detects position of the sheet projected downward from the nip part 2. A control device 15 controls pressure-contact load or separating torque of the separating roller so that position of the second sheet detected by the sheet position sensor 12 coincides with a target value when two sheets are detected by the number-of-sheet sensor 14.
