Request recognizing means (373) recognizes an input operation of a source switch request for switching from the contents of a broadcast program extracted from broadcast waves to contents recorded in a recording/reproducing apparatus to display them on display means (350). It is then performed to read from a memory (360) the values of a plurality of set factors, such as brightness, contents, black depth and so on, of the picture quality predetermined in accordance with the source of the prior contents and corresponding to the switched sources. The values of the set factors predetermined in accordance with the source of the prior contents are compared with values read anew to sequentially modify the values of the set factors stepwise. This can prevent the occurrence of screen flickers which otherwise would occur due to an abrupt change in the picture quality during a process of modifying the picture quality, thereby efficiently adjusting the picture quality.
