PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a light source device for an endoscope which does not output a laser beam from a socket. SOLUTION: On a side surface of the light source device 20, the socket 20a wherein a light guide fiber bundle 16 projecting from an end surface of a connector 10d of the endoscope 10 is inserted and an electric socket 21 having a continuity with a ROM 17 in the connector 10d are formed. The identification information of the endoscope 10 stored in the ROM 17 is read out by a system control circuit 42 through the above electric socket 21. The system control circuit 42 makes a laser light source 40 emit a laser beam only when the identification information is read out from the ROM 17 indicating that the above endoscope 10 is a fluorescence observation endoscope. The laser beam is made to be the parallel light by a collimator lens 39, is reflected by a half mirror 29 and is put into the light guide fibers bundle 16 by a condenser lens 28.
