PREFORM, OPTICAL FIBER, AND METHOD OF MANUFACTURING OPTICAL FIBER

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical fiber having a core with an axially asymmetrical structure suitable to be used for a direct transmission of an image and a picture or the like, a method of manufacturing an optical fiber having an optional shape with high dimensional precision, and a preform used in the manufacturing method. SOLUTION: The preform is manufactured by covering the external surrounding of a first glass having a single softening point temperature by a second glass having a single softening point temperature lower than that of the first glass and heating for fusing and joining them together. The optical fiber having a structure of a precise optional shape is obtained by drawing the preform. COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI
