PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To facilitate settings of an image reading apparatus depending on its model or apparatus body.

SOLUTION: An instruction entry apparatus 10 has a conversion table wherein instructions entered to the instruction entry apparatus 10 and codes generated by a code system independently of the image reading apparatus are stored in cross-reference with each other. When an instruction to be instructed to the image reading apparatus 30 is entered to the instruction entry apparatus 10, the instruction entry apparatus 10 extracts the code in cross-reference with the instruction from the conversion table and outputs the extracted code. The image reading apparatus 30 has an inverse conversion table wherein codes outputted from the instruction entry apparatus 10 and instructions from which output results according to instructions entered to the instruction entry apparatus 10 are obtained by the image reading apparatus 30 are stored in cross-reference with each other. The image reading apparatus 30 acquires the code outputted from the instruction entry apparatus 10 from the inverse conversion table, and reads an original and generates original image data denoting the image of the original on the basis of the extracted instruction.
