Vehicle steering ratio control

A steering system 10 for a vehicle includes a controller 18, at least one steerable wheel 12 having a steering angle 20, a powered actuator 14 controlling the steering angle 20 and a steering wheel 16 providing a driver input control angle. The controller 18 selectively varies a ratio of the input control angle to the steering angle 20 in accordance with road conditions. If off road conditions are detected by sensors 60, a constant steering ratio (52 see fig 3) may be selected. If on road conditions are detected, higher steering ratios (50 see fig 3) may be selected.
