In a process to make a lightweight frame forming part of e.g. an aircraft wing, a sub-structure is assembled commencing with a transverse rib (3) to which one or more longitudinal ribs are assembled by push-fit installation. The transverse rib has two facing sides, each with tongue-shaped tabs (8) that are inserted in a slot (7) within a sheet metal skin (1, 2). The end face at right angles to the longitudinal ribs (4) has a sheet metal cap that is anchored by a mechanical fitting.
