The process involves connecting extensible optical transmission nodes to one another in a set of transmission directions in an optical transmission network. Unconnected optical fiber transmission lines at an output (23) of an optical beam-splitter (2) and at an input (33) of an optical combiner (3) of a node are connected to a new transmission direction or to respective extraction and insertion devices (4, 5) not connected to the node. An independent claim is also included for a wavelength multiplexing optical transmission network.
