The contact surface between the cartridge (20) and shell (10) is irregular and when the shell is fired the cartridge expands so that it becomes fixed against these surface irregularities (12), preventing it from slipping out of the shell. A shell comprises a drive cartridge which is inserted into a space inside the shell connected to a transfer channel (4) in this shell and which is held inside this channel by friction. The contact surface between the cartridge and shell is irregular and when the shell is fired the cartridge expands so that it becomes fixed against these surface irregularities, preventing it from slipping out of the shell. An independent claim is also included for a drive cartridge for locating in a cavity in a shell in order to deliver a firing gas pressure to a transfer channel in the shell, comprising a detonator (5) and a propellant charge (6) inside a mantle. The material at the mantle surface (21) expands when the cartridge is detonated, causing the cartridge to expand.
