PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an intermediate transfer apparatus and an image forming apparatus where cleaning is performed, while preventing expansion and contraction of an intermediate transfer belt having elasticity. SOLUTION: Regarding the apparatus, provided that the moving velocity of a cleaning roll 83 at a contact point 64T of the cleaning roll 83 with the intermediate transfer belt 64 is expressed by Vc and the moving velocity of the intermediate transfer belt 64 is expressed by Vb, the relation Vc/Vb≤0.995 or Vc/Vb≥1.005 is satisfied. Thus, the cleaning roll 83 slides on the intermediate transfer belt 64 at the contact point 64T, and the expansion and contraction of the belt 64 in the circulating direction is fully saturated, then, even in the case the moving velocity Vc of the cleaning roll 83 at the contact point 64T becomes irregular, irregularities in an image (especially, misregistration) on the toner carrying surface 64H of the belt 64 can be suppressed.
