PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a laser drying method and an apparatus therefor by which drying energy efficiency is improved and compactification of the apparatus is attained, which are excellent in speeding up of switching of drying conditions and which hardly produce drying unevenness even when rapid drying is performed. SOLUTION: When web-shaped matter to be dried 12 is dried by being irradiated with laser beams from a laser irradiation means 14, the laser beams are diffused by a plano-convex cylindrical lens 16A so that the luminous flux cross section of the laser beam may be spread in a web width direction of the matter to be dried 12 and further the matter to be dried 12 is moved in a longitudinal direction of the web while irradiating the matter to be dried 12 with diffused laser beams.
